March’s focus on wood provides an opportunity – beyond failing to resist the wordplay of the title – to use a very specific and special exhibition as illustration of the links between craft and the increasingly urgent sustainable development agenda: the Wych Elm project at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.
In recent years, the use of CAD (Computer Aided Design) in craft practice has been hotly debated and coldly ignored in equal measure. However the CAD shaped elephant in the room is not going to disappear. On the contrary, a quick search of craftscotland's Maker Directory suggests that the number of makers using CAD-related processes is on the increase.

This month, we are delighted to present you with details of our Meet Your Maker exhibition, the fascinating story of The Westland Exhibition, and a spotlight feature on textile artist Deirdre Nelson. Emma also brings a report on Batch Craft, and introduces the latest member of the team, Rachel McCrum.
In our first newsletter of 2010 we look to the year ahead, with our submission for Collect 2010, details of a new maker mentoring scheme from HI-Arts, and information on craft courses and workshops. We also put jeweller and silversmith Leah Black under our maker spotlight, Emma discusses online selling, and we invite you to volunteer with us at Meet Your Maker.
