Living Traditions - Contemporary Indigenous Crafts Conference is taking place in the Birnam Institute in Perthshire on 28 and 29 September 2005. The conference will present projects and developments in current practice since the New Makars conference held in Inverness in 1996. What can indigenous crafts contribute to Scotland's continuing traditions, economic development and tourism? What is their role within the wider cultural context? The keynote speaker is Dr Nancy Groce, curator, Centre for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC, USA. Other speakers include Valerie Pragnell of the Scottish Basketmakers Circle, Mary Norton of the Grimsay Boat Project in North Uist and Colin Adamson of Violin Makers Scotland. On the day before the conference opens, a reception to mark the first year of craftscotland will be on at the Birnam Institute. Find out more about craftscotland: the first year.
