‘East Weaves West: Basketry from Japan and Britain’ Conference

Speakers include:
• Mary Butcher: An introduction to the exhibition, outlining the overall concept as well as the complexity of traditional basketmaking in Japan. • Catherine Atherton: Is there a Japanese aesthetic and, if so, does it depend on the support of tradition and traditional values or has it become a global aesthetic whose elements are entirely contemporary? • Noriko Takamiya: An overview of the development of basketry exhibition in Japan over the past twenty years. • Clare Wilks: An examination of the artist’s public installations from the entrance to the Bournewood Sculpture Trail in England to her involvement with the garden project in Hokkaido, designed by Bunny Guiness, with references to other work in both Japan and Europe. • Takeo Tanabe and Lee Dalby will discuss their individual approaches to creating installations for “East Weaves West”
