What quality of work will be represented?
Showcases will be developed as the vehicle for promoting quality work. Drawing boundaries regarding general inclusion in the website and database however is problematical. For example, distinctions such as: professional v. hobbyist, part-time v. full-time, whether work is made in or of materials from Scotland, level of turnover etc. would be virtually impossible to define and would be counter to the goal of all-inclusiveness. A workable definition has been employed as outlined in the study undertaken for and published by the Scottish Arts Council - Crafts Businesses in Scotland: " ‘Crafts’ is taken to mean an object which must have a high degree of hand-made input, but not necessarily made or designed using traditional materials, which is produced as a one-off or as part of a small batch, the design of which may or may not be culturally embedded in the country of production, and which is sold for profit. ‘Crafts enterprises’ are those involved in the production of crafts on a part-time or full-time basis.".
