An exhibition of ceramics by Richard Slee at the Pier Arts Centre in Orkney is his first major solo exhibition north of the border.
Richard has been producing inventive and provocative work in ceramics for over 30 years. In 2001 he was awarded the prestigious Jerwood Applied Art Prize which resulted in the creation of ‘Panorama’, an ambitious new work first shown at the Tate St Ives in 2002. 'Panorama' is an extraordinary installation made up of a variety of animals, logs, clubs and meteorites.
This new exhibition, ‘Panoramas’, brings ‘Panorama’ to Orkney alongside a selection of work created by Richard over the last four years.
Describing himself as a “potter” Richard uses the traditional and contemporary in his ceramic objects. The forms he creates are firmly rooted in the everyday but are altered in a way that highlights the viewer’s understanding of the object. The resulting parade of familiar yet surreal forms challenges popular perceptions of ornament with witty diversions.
The exhibition is on at The Pier Arts Centre, Victoria Street, Stromness, Orkney, KW16 3AA (01856 850 209) from 15 June until 14 August 2004. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am to 12.30 and 1.30pm until 5pm.
