28 July 2004

The North Lands Creative Glass Annual Conference on 4 and 5 September has the theme ‘Architecture and Light’ and will investigate the sculptural and architectural possibilities of glass, space and light with a diverse range of speakers.

The keynote speaker is Thomas Heatherwick whose design projects include an environmental artwork made of recycled glass at the Laing Gallery in Newcastle, a 7m dazzling glass bridge, a 56m high sculpture for Manchester’s Commonwealth Gales Stadium and a Buddhist temple in Southern Japan.

Other speakers during the two day event include:

  • Tina Oldknow, curator of Modern Glass at the Corning Museum of Glass, who will explore glass as a material for architecture from the picture window to the curtain wall.
  • Richard Posner will present a photo essay on the sources and structure of three of his current glass architecture projects.
  • Jakob Cigler of Prague based architects Cigler/Marani will discuss current projects ranging from intimate residential buildings to a large scale commercial park.
  • John Barber, an expert in the area of archaeology, will be discussing Chambered Cairns in NE Scotland which he believes constitute an art-form.  His presentation will be followed by a visit to Camster Cairns, an important Neolithic burial chamber.
  • Dan Klein, one of the founders of North Lands Creative Glass,  will discuss the work of Václav Cigler who has been at the forefront of a movement that uses the optical qualities of glass to create new internal and external light.
  • Wendy Turner of the Bullseye Glass Company, Portland, USA, will discuss the evolution of Bullseye and why they work with artists and most recently architects.
  • Helen Maurer, who was awarded the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize for Glass in 2003, will discuss how she uses the combined media of glass and light.
  • Warren Langly will discuss his 25 year fascination with the manipulation of light through his sculptural and architectural scale works in glass.
