Trio of Crafts in Glasgow Exhibition
02 November 2004

An exhibition at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow features work by jeweller Jack Cunningham, ceramicist Zoe Whiteside and textile artist Malcolm Lochead.

Jack Cunningham, who works in Glasgow,  studied jewellery at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee and over the past twenty years has exhibited nationally and internationally.  In his work he uses his own visual language to communicate information.

He was one of the makers invited to exhibit in the 13 Hands exhibition curated by pupils in Caol Primary School in Fort William.  One of the children said about his jewellery “I like how it all makes up into a story.  It must have been hard to think of a story and then to make pieces to go with it.”  His work was also an influence on school pupils involved in the Glasgow Jewellery Project which is currently touring libraries in Glasgow.

A graduate of Stafford University and the Royal College of Art in London, Zoe Whiteside hand-builds ceramic animals using slabs of clay which makes every piece unique.

Textile artist Malcolm Lochead wanted to call his exhibition “It’s pretty but is it art?” as asked by the devil in the Garden of Eden in Kipling’s “Conundrum of the Workshops”.  His reasoning was to echo the on-going argument between textile artists and people in fine arts who consider embroidery to be a craft and not Art.

His work in the exhibition is based on the observation of exquisite surfaces, which may have been folded, bent and manipulated.

The exhibition is on from 30 October until 23 November 2004 at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery, 134 Blythswood Square, Glasgow G2 4EL tel: 0141 332 4027. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10am to 5pm.
