Wood and Metal in Edinburgh Exhibition
08 November 2004

An exhibition featuring silver and gold work by Michael Lloyd and woodcarving by Mary Lloyd opens today at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh.

Michael Lloyd has developed a body of work specifically for this exhibition.  His work is inspired by the landscape which surrounds his studio in south west Scotland and this new work expresses his belief that different forms of art can act at mediators between humans and the natural world.  He says “I still feel naïve enough to think a vase of flowers on the kitchen table makes the world a better place.”

Michael was one of the silversmiths featured in the exhibition ‘Creation: An Insight into the Mind of the Modern Silversmith’ which took place in London earlier this year and he reveals more about his sources of creativity in our feature on the show.

Mary Lloyd studied at Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art in the late seventies.  She moved into wood carving after converting a Dutch barge prior to moving to her new home in south west Scotland.   She has developed a series of low relief panels, carved in limewood and painted to represent an autobiographical story of nuture and loving which express serenity.

The exhibition is on at the Scottish Gallery, 16 Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6HZ from 8 November until 1 December 2004.  Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm.
