EDGE Textiles Exhibition Opens in Glasgow
30 November 2004

An exhibition of work by ‘EDGE’, a group of Scottish textile artists who promote excellence in all aspects of contemporary textiles, has opened at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow.

Called ‘Gilt Edged’ the exhibition shows work by a selection of the 120 Scottish textile artists who are members of the group.  Amongst the artists exhibiting are Alison King, Rosemary Campbell, Kim Gunn, Midge Gourlay, Moira Dickson, Sue Jury, Susan McColl, Sheila Mortlock, Sarah Sumsion, Alexa Wilson, Lindy Richardson, Christine Moodie, Jean Mellin, Veronica Togneri.

‘EDGE’ was formed five years ago by the merging of three leading groups of textile artists – Edinburgh based ‘SETA’, Dundee based ‘Embryo’ and Glasgow based ‘One, 6, and 7’.  The name of the new group incorporates the initial letters of the three home cities with an e for embroidery to form ‘EDGE’.

The design of textiles is the ‘historical bedrock’ of all three groups although work now produced encompasses a much wider application of textile design and mixed media.

The aim of the group is to promote excellence in all aspects of contemporary textiles and textile-related work and to bring it to a wider audience.  Their inaugural open exhibition took place in April 2000 at the McManus Galleries in Dundee and was attended by over 20,000 people.

The ‘Gilt Edged’ exhibition is on at the Collins Gallery, University of Strathclyde, 22 Richmond Street, Glasgow G1 1XQ from 27 November until 23 December 2004.  Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 12 noon to 4pm.  Admission is free.
