Aileen Tan, who graduated in 2004 in silversmithing and jewellery from Glasgow School of Art, was the winner of the inaugural Glasgow 1999 Design Medal for her kinetic jewellery.
Awarded by the Lighthouse, Scotland Centre for Architecture and Design, and the City of Glasgow, the medal, which was open to all disciplines, was presented to Aileen by Sir Terence Conran at a ceremony in Glasgow in November.
Her jewellery is inspired by the movement between the carriages on the tracks of a roller coaster, capturing dramatic movement on a small scale, exploring weight, motion and gravity. Each piece of jewellery has to be absolutely accurate in order to maintain the correct clearances and friction.
Chair of the judging panel, Leonie Bell, programme director at the Lighthouse, said: "Aileen Tan's elegant jewellery won us over. Her work demonstrates both precision engineering and a playfulness that quietly delivers a disarmingly pleasurable experience".
