Lusterware Shimmers in Edinburgh Exhibition
07 March 2005

An exhibition of new lusterware by Sutton Taylor has opened at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh.

Lusterware is a technique which was developed by the Persians and produces brilliant, shifting colours that appear to shimmer above the surface of the clay.

Due to its unpredictability the technique is often frustrating for potters, however, Sutton Taylor is one of the few modern potters who uses it.

Self-taught, he discovered the technique during his early experiments with woodfiring when he noticed the faint metallic glimmer after an accidental firing, and he continues to discover new ways of using lusterware.

His newest richly patterned pots use a palette of blues, reds and golds to explore his interest in the landscape both in his native Yorkshire and in his current home in a remote corner of West Penwith.

The exhibition is on from 7 to 30 March 2005 at the Scottish Gallery, 16 Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6HZ tel: 0131 558 1200.  Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm.  Admission free.
