Scottish jeweller Marianne Anderson is currently showing her work at Schmuck 2005 in Munich, one of the most prestigious and oldest annual international exhibitions of contemporary jewellery in the world.
The event is on from 10 until 16 March, and Marianne is one of 56 jewellers from 20 countries selected this year to show their work from 375 applications from 32 countries. The jury was led by Professor Dorothea Pruhl who said “The most important criteria were individuality of approach, a submission that was highly diverse without sacrificing inherent consistency, and independence of current trends.”
Marianne graduated from Glasgow School of Art only two years ago and her work is now being shown alongside internationally renowned jewellers such as Marjorie Schick from the USA, Bussi Buhs from Germany and the Catalan jeweller Ramon Puig Cuyas, whose work is currently on show in Scotland at the ‘Maker – Wearer – Viewer’ exhibition .
In her jewellery she examines ornament and order looking at the context of traditional ornamentation within the decorative arts highlighting its beauty, meaning and importance. Pierced silhouettes of oxidised silver are systematically arranged and intersected by grids of gemstones, pearls and 18ct gold, or scattered randomly to deconstruct controlled patterns, creating bold fragmented images on an intricate scale.
She is delighted to have been selected and says “I think that being present in Munich will be a significant learning experience. As a representative from Scotland I hope that my participation will help maintain the reputation of, and interest in, Scottish jewellery and applied arts. I am looking forward to seeing the work by other makers in Schmuck and attending the seminars by Robert Baines and Giampaolo Babetto, which I think will be inspiring.”
Marianne, who co-founded Brazen Studios in Glasgow in 2004, recently received a professional development award from the Scottish Arts Council and last year worked in collaboration with textile designer Tomoko Hayashi. She will be exhibiting in ‘Ring Tone’ at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh in April and in ‘100% Proof’ in USA later this year.
