An exhibition of wobbly wood animals by Jeff Soan and 'Wish you were here' by ceramist Katharine Morling have both opened at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow.
It was a chance encounter with a wobbly rat from Chile, a folk toy, that inspired Jeff to begin making his own wooden toys. He started his workshop in 1987, after taking a course in toymaking at London College of Furniture, and since then has won the British Toymakers Guild cup five times and has exhibited regularly at Chelsea Crafts Fair since 1991.
He says “My work reflects equally a love of creatures, great and small and a love of wood. My earlier training as an artist and more lately as a toymaker has led to objects that can be seen as playful sculptures.”
The ‘Wish you were here’ exhibition shows work by Katharine Morling. She graduated in ceramics from Falmouth College in 2003 and has exhibited at the New Designers Fair, Affordable Art Fair, New Designers One Year On and the V&A Summer Show ‘Wish you were here’.
Both exhibitions are on at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery, 134 Blythswood Street, Glasgow G2 4EL tel: 0141 332 4027 from 18 March until 19 April 2005. Opening hours Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm.
