The 100th Dazzle exhibition of contemporary jewellery by designers from across the UK and Europe has opened in Glasgow’s Merchant Square.
The exhibition features over 2000 new pieces by over 40 established and emerging designers in styles that range from the delicate and minimalist to the elaborate and eye-catching.
Many of Scotland’s leading young designers are selling work at the event including Donna Barry, Susan Kerr, Hannah Louise Lamb, Carla Edwards, Shona Fidgett, Alison Macleod, Lilian Busch, Joanne Thompson and Naoko Yoshizawa.
Glasgow based jewellers Georgia Wiseman and Julie Allison are taking part for the first time. Twenty three year old award winning designer Georgia Wiseman, a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, uses computer aided design within her work which focuses on geometric forms, symmetry and repetitive patterns. In contrast, the inspiration for Julie Allison is memories from the past and present of her family and friends, and her home.
Their work is shown alongside some of the world’s leading designers including Japanese designer Yoko Izawa whose veiled jewellery is knitted and hand dyed from lycra and nylon yarn, Malcolm Morris who worked on the jewellery in the film Shakespeare in Love and UK designer Jane Adam who uses dyed aluminium which she “pushes to extremes where beauty becomes a product of near-destruction”.
Dazzle is on at the Merchant Square, 71-73 Albion Street, Merchant City, Glasgow G1 1RB from 9 May until 28 May 2005. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm. Admission free.
