The Summer Mix exhibition at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow blends a variety of jewellery and silversmithing.
Jewellers Ewa Doerenkamp, Emma Farquharson, Fiona DeMarco, Jill Newbrook, Jane Macintosh, Jenny Deans and Katharine Warner are united with silversmiths Angela Cork, Peter Rowling and Shimara Carlow.
Shimara Carlow, who is based in Dumfries, is one of the 15 Scottish designers selected to take part in Chelsea Crafts Fair this year. She was born in a remote coastal area in West Cork in Southern Ireland and she is still influenced by her early childhood spent collecting shells, stones, feathers and pods from along the sea shore. She trained at Glasgow School of Art where she experimented with handmade paper and silver and then spent two years on a residency at Bishopsland Workshops.
She creates a range of small and large pod vessels, bowls, carafes and tableware in silver. The vessels are constructed to be free standing and off centre, and she creates silk paper models to be viewed and exhibited alongside their silver counterparts.
The Summer Mix exhibition is on at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery, 134 Blythswood Street, Glasgow G2 4EL from 20 May until 14 June 2005. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm. Admission free.
