A knitted ceramic teapot is just one of the creative ideas to be found in the student Degree Shows taking place across Scotland in June.
The teapot can be seen in the Degree Show at Glasgow School of Art where mature student Helen Gilmour has explored the connections between ceramics and traditional handcrafts like knitting and crochet. She explains “I want to produce work that plays on the position that ceramics occupies on the border between art and craft.” Her teapot, which was knitted and then dipped in clay and fired, alludes to a functional piece but is totally non-functional.
The Degree Show at Glasgow School of Art includes textiles, silversmithing and jewellery, fashion and ceramics, and is on from 18 to 25 June 2005. It is their 160th anniversary this year.
In the Scottish Borders the Degree Show at Heriot Watt University School of Textiles and Design in Galashiels is on from 22 to 25 June.
‘430 Degrees and Rising’, the Degree Show at Edinburgh College of Art is on from 18 June to 24 June showing ceramics, textiles, glass, silversmithing and jewellery.
‘Creative Energies’, the Degree Show at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen runs from 17 to 24 June and is part of “LOOK 2005 – art and the city”.
Details of all four venues and opening hours can be found in Crafts Events.
