A group of makers and artists in Sutherland are holding their first Open Studio Trail during June 2005.
The trail offers the chance to see a variety of work, from weaving to ceramics, being produced, and to enjoy the scenery of Sutherland. There may also be a chance to buy work directly from the maker.
Makers taking part in the trail include textile artists Joan Baxter, Sonia Bidwell, Jan Kilpatrick and Rachel Skene, ceramicist Martina Macleod and glass on metal artist Iris Wallace.
Joan makes woven tapestry wallhangings inspired by the landscapes and history of Sutherland, Sonia spins local wools to create wallhangings illustrating the myths, legends and poetry of northern Europe and Jan produces collages inspired by natural forms using either broken ceramics or recycled textiles.
Rachel, a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, has created her own range of handwoven and printed fashion accessories including bags and scarves.
The trail is complimented by exhibitions of work by the makers and artists taking part at the Jail in Dornoch in June and at Timespan in Helmsdale in July.
