Textiles Exhibition Explores Boundaries with Jewellery
26 September 2005

Interface, an exhibition of international art textiles curated by jeweller Susan Cross, has opened at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh.

The exhibition is intended as the first of a series of Scottish Gallery exhibitions of contemporary craft curated by makers.   The exhibition, which includes jewellery by Susan, offers visitors an opportunity to explore the common boundaries between the two disciplines.

Earlier this year Susan spoke about the challenges of curating the exhibition. “They were quite brave in suggesting a maker from another discipline to curate the exhibition” she said.  “I sometimes feel a bit claustrophobic in jewellery and it has been great to research other areas, and meet people and discover how the textile world connects together.”

The exhibition includes work by Chiyoko Tanaka from Japan, Polly Binns from UK, Katri Haahti from Finland, Marian Billenga from the Netherlands and Sara Brennan from Scotland.

Interface is on at the Scottish Gallery, 16 Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6HZ from 12 September until 5 October 2005.  Admission free.  A touring exhibition, it will be at the Ruthin Craft Centre in Wales from November until 8 January 2006.

Susan Cross and Sara Brennan discussed their work and the connections between jewellery and textiles at an event at Collect 2005.
