Animal Magic in Glasgow
17 November 2005

Animal Nation, an exhibition of work inspired by animals and their personalities, is currently on at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow.

The show features work by Jeremy James, Nick Mackman, Angela Hunter and Christine Cummings and includes penguins, dogs, hares and a host of other creatures.

Drawing on her experience as a rhino keeper and on safari, Nick Mackman aims to get under the skin of the animal and then recreate it, giving each one its own personality. Her one off clay animals are Raku fired, giving a rich but natural crackle glaze. Sometimes bristles, papier maché and other materials are used. Collectors of her work include John Cleese, John Nettles, Dame Judi Dench and June Whitfield.

Jeremy James trained at Exeter College of Art and Design and in Cardiff. After working as a visiting lecturer in numerous colleges he established a workshop in Suffolk where he designed, made and exhibited work until 1995. He then moved to Derbyshire to take up a new teaching post on The Applied Arts degree course at the University of Derby as well as developing a new and improved workshop. Since then Jeremy has divided his time between teaching and continuing to make and show work with many galleries nationally and internationally.

Angela Hunter, who trained in Edinburgh, observes animals before expressing her feelings for them and the space they inhabit in her work.

Animal Nation is on at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery, 134 Blythswood Street, Glasgow G2 4EL tel: 0141 332 4027 from 20 October until 22 November 2005.  Opening hours Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm.
