The calligrapher and painter Professor Lu Rui Xiang of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in China will be visiting the University of Dundee in March 2006 to hold a Masterclass in Chinese calligraphy.
Over the past 25 years Professor Lu has exhibited widely in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea. He has held individual shows and delivered lectures in Hong Kong and Australia and his work is held in permanent collections worldwide.
The ancient art of Chinese calligraphy has developed over many centuries and is one of the most important parts of Chinese culture. There is a strong sense of rhythm and design in the lettering with each character created using a series of brushstrokes. It is often believed that it reveals the personality of the writer. It has inspired many artists including Picasso.
Professor Lu will take participants through traditional brush pen techniques and the structure of the various characters, as well as looking at formal calligraphy layout and pattern. His visit will provide a rare and unique opportunity to learn these ancient techniques from an esteemed Chinese Master.
The Masterclass runs from 13 to 17 March and is open to anyone with an interest in calligraphy. There is a fee of £250 which includes all materials, tuition, lunch and refreshments for the week.
Professor Lu will also deliver a public lecture during the same week, the exact date and venue have still to be confirmed. Admission to the lecture is free.
An exhibition of his work will be held in the University.
Makers wishing to attend the Masterclass may apply for support through the Scottish Arts Council professional development fund, marking ‘craft’ as the main art form.
Details about registering for the Masterclass are available in opportunities.
