Fleeces Star in Contemporary Felt Show
18 January 2006

There are only a few days left to visit ‘On the Map’, an exhibition of International contemporary felt at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh.

Within this exhibition of work by members of the International Feltmakers Assocation is a film of a visit to Mongolia last year by a group of Scottish feltmakers which shows the techniques and traditions involved in building a yurt.

Any visitors uncertain about what a yurt is can experience the reality as at the centre of the exhibition is the storytelling yurt created by Scottish feltmakers to celebrate the millennium.

The exhibition shows work by feltmakers from 12 countries across the world made using local fleece.   Over 40 breeds of sheep are featured in the work which includes Valenki shoes from Russia, a forest of rings from America, handbags and wall hung pieces each with its own inspiration and made using different materials and techniques.

'On the Map’ is on in the Exhibition Hall at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh, Inverleith Row, Edinburgh from 2 November until 22 January 2006.  Opening hours 10.00am to 3.30pm.  Admission free.

Read our craftscotland review to find out more about the work in the exhibition.

There is a smaller exhibition of similar work by the five Scottish feltmakers in this exhibition at the Bonhoga Gallery, Weisdale Mill, Shetland from 7 to 29 January 2006.
