Dumfries Choice for Mosaics Exhibition
12 June 2006

Resurfacings, an exhibition of indoor mosaics by artist and sculptor Kate Anderson has opened in Dumfries.

The exhibition is a collection of recent indoor mosaic work with the connecting links of ‘stories’, ‘signs’ and ‘superstition’. The title refers both to the practicalities of direct mosaic making and to the overall intention of the whole, a reassembly of symbolic imagery and a reoccurrence of underlying themes.

The show combines medium sized wall pieces in vitreous glass and ceramics with screens and free-standing work.  Hand-painted ceramics, stone, smalti and other materials are all used in a variety of combinations. Her aim in exhibiting this work in Dumfries is to raise the profile of mosaic work in the region.

Kate is a graduate Maidstone College of Art and Design and was awarded a Postgraduate Commonwealth Scholarship to India when she worked in the University of Shantiniketan in West Bengal.  She has exhibited mosaics locally in Threaves and the Tolbooth Gallery in Kirkcudbright, and recently took part in the Spring Fling open studios weekend for the first time.

Resurfacings is on in the Rutherford McCowan block of the Crichton Campus, University of Glasgow in Dumfries from 12 June to 21 July 2006.  Opening hours Monday to Thursday 8am to 9pm, Fridays 8am to 6pm and Saturdays 10am to 2pm.  Admission free.
