The annual Degree Shows at the art colleges in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow open on Saturday 17 June with a collection of striking and exciting work by new graduates.
In the ‘Creative Horizons’ Degree Show at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen 3D design student Kevin Ho has developed an innovative product which looks at the cultural issue of Chinese dining. He has developed ‘bowls’ with thermo and hydro-chromic technology which are decorated with cultural and historical facts about China that appear randomly over the bowls as food is moved around and the material heats to 30 degrees.
Kevin has also developed a chopstick aid to help people master the art of using them and a magnetised base for his sculpture so it does not move while in use, again to make the eating experience easier and more enjoyable.
At Edinburgh College of Art the 2006 Degree Show ‘A New Perspective’ includes ceramics, fashion, furniture, glass, jewellery and silversmithing, tapestry and textiles.
Silversmithing and Jewellery graduate, Kathy Vognes, combines simple metal structures with delicate textured rubber shapes. In her large piece ‘Earconch’, which is inspired by sea creatures, she aims not just to emulate nature but to mutate the artificial with the natural.
The Glasgow School of Art Degree Show includes ceramics, jewellery and textiles. In Silversmithing and Jewellery, there is a range of ‘afternoon tea’ jewellery, complete with felt cakes and ‘sweet’ necklace, by Suzanne Smith, while in ceramics Ken Eastwood has created life like clay boots.
