Furniture Graduate Wins Craftex Medal

George Rutland, a furniture graduate from Anniesland College has won the best in show Gold Medal at Craftex 2006, the Trades House of Glasgow annual craft awards and exhibition.  Craftex showcases the best work in craft and design by students at the city’s colleges of further education. 

George took an NC in Furniture Design and Construction at Anniesland following his retiral from the Joseph Dunn Group where he had worked for 27 years.  His sideboard in ash with African blackwood inlays takes its design influence from Frank Lloyd Wright. 

Elizabeth Herbin of Killearn, an HND student in Public Art at Anniesland College, received the Trades House of Glasgow Deacon Convener’s Design prize for her wall hanging in constructed textiles, which also won her £200 in the Open Advanced category.

This is the 11th annual Craftex awards and exhibition, which presents end of term curriculum work prepared by students.  Crafts represented include bookbinding, ceramics/pottery, decorative glass, embroidery, fashion, furniture making, industrial/product design, jewellery, millinery, musical instruments and stonemasonry.  Contributing colleges are Anniesland, Cardonald, Glasgow College of Food Technology, Glasgow Metropolitan, John Wheatley, Langside, Nautical, North Glasgow and Stow College.

The exhibition is open from 15 to 18 June 2006 at the Trades Hall, 85 Glassford Street, Glasgow.  Opening hours Thursday to Saturday 10am to 4.30pm and Sunday 12 noon to 4.30pm.  Admission free.
