Scottish Graduates Head for London
28 June 2006

New Designers, the largest event showcasing the work of 4,000 of the best design graduates from across the UK opens this week in London.

The event, which this year celebrates 21 years of excellence, gives students from 20 design disciplines a chance to show their work to professionals, industry and the media.

The best young designers from Scotland will be at the show with graduates taking part from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee, Edinburgh College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Heriot-Watt University in Galashiels and Napier in Edinburgh.  The range of work includes jewellery and precious metalwork, fashion, textiles and accessories, product design, ceramics & glass and contemporary applied arts.

Three Scottish designers were selected this year to exhibit their work in ‘One Year On’, a showcase of work by designer-makers who graduated a year ago or have been in business for a year.

Printed textiles designer Johanna Basford, a graduate from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design is joined by jewellers Abigail Percy and Marianne Anderson, both graduates of Glasgow School of Art.

Over the last year Abigail, who will be showing her diffusion collection of vintage inspired jewellery, has been building up outlets across the UK, Europe and New York.

Marianne, who explores patterns and motifs in her work focusing on the beauty, meaning and importance of ornament, recently held a solo exhibition at the Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh and her work was shown earlier this month at SOFA in New York.

Johanna combines delicate hand drawings of imagined botanics and insects, with silk screen printing to create her collection of designer wallpapers and fabrics.

New Designers 2005 runs for two separate weeks from 29 June to 2 July and the 6 to 9 July 2005.  Week one includes jewellery, textiles, glass, ceramics, and contemporary applied arts while week two includes furniture and  product design.  For further details about the event or to buy tickets online visit New Designers.
