Craft takes the Stage at the Edinburgh Festival
18 August 2006

This year visitors to the Edinburgh International Festival can experience and enjoy the creativity and innovativeness of Scottish craft in a variety of locations across the city.

For jewellery lovers August is the month when Dazzle, a selling exhibition with over 3,000 pieces by 46 leading contemporary designers from across the UK, arrives for its annual show in the Atrium at the Traverse Theatre.

More jewellery can be found at 100% Proof in the Scottish Gallery, an exhibition curated by jeweller Dorothy Hogg, showing world class silversmithing and jewellery by 33 Scottish designers from new graduates to established makers.

Also at the Scottish Gallery is an exhibition by 11 international glass designers including Scottish glass artists Alison Kinnaird and Keiko Mukaide.  This is one of two shows celebrating the 10th anniversary of North Lands Creative Glass.  The second exhibition, Reflections – a Decade of North Lands Creative Glass, is on at the Museum of Scotland and features over 60 works by internationally acclaimed glass makers.

Any hat enthusiasts visiting the city should find time to visit Orient at Fabhatrix where milliners Fawns Reid and Rosy Naylor have created a new collection inspired by Russian constructivism and the patterns and colours of India.

In St John’s Church on the corner of Princes Street the Scottish Furniture Makers Association is holding its annual exhibition of contemporary furniture by some of Scotland’s leading designers many of whom will be available to discuss their work.

An unusual exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, The Face of Craft, features photography of ten makers by Shannon Tofts, alongside displays of their work.

The Adam Pottery is holding Clay 2006, an exhibition by resident makers of contemporary and traditional work showing the marvellously adaptable qualities of clay.

And for any visitors who want to find something to remind them of their visit to Edinburgh then a visit to Concrete Wardrobe should be fitted in.  Visitors will find a mix of contemporary Scottish fashion, clothing and interior accessories, as well as glass, jewellery and ceramics.

This is just a flavour of the craft on show during August.  For details of all these exhibitions and more visit our craftscotland events listings.  Details of more Edinburgh venues to buy craft can be found in our venue directory.
