Edinburgh Jeweller Wins Dewar Arts Award
21 September 2006

Jeweller and silversmith Sarah Hutchison, who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art last year, has won a Dewar Arts Award.

The awards, which were set up in memory of Scotland’s First First Minister Donald Dewar, are given to young Scots of outstanding ability in any art form who have insufficient funds to realise their creative potential.

Sarah, who is 23 years old, was described by her nominator as “an ambitious spirit” who consistently produces exciting, fresh and radical work.  Her award will enable her to design and produce three large-scale objects in silver and gold, visit the International Jewellery London Fair and Inhorgenta in Munich, and spend three months as an artist in residence with silversmiths in Mexico in spring 2007.

In her work Sarah explores different ways of incorporating stones and pearls with metal structures and she is passionate about saw piercing metal.  Her inspiration is the world around her, particularly the natural world, and her work explores movement and texture.

She has been exploring innovative ways of working where she pierce cuts out shapes in sheet metal, and as she raises the piece these sections alter and change shape.  She has also created the impression of flowing fabric by punch texturing the whole surface before saw piercing then forming the sheet.

Patricia Ferguson MSP, Minister for Tourism, Culture & Sport commented at the announcement of the awards “Scotland has a rich, vibrant and dynamic artistic and cultural life. We aim to recognise and nurture cultural talent and promote excellence.  I am delighted that through the Dewar Arts Awards young people are being given the opportunity to unleash their creative potential.”

Sarah, who was one of the exhibitors at our first craftscotland exhibition held in September, will be exhibiting at the 24th Goldsmiths’ Fair in Goldsmiths’ Hall, London from 2 to 8 October 2006.
