Glass, an exhibition featuring the work of five glass artists, has opened at the Designs Gallery in Castle Douglas.
The exhibition features the work of five glass artists - Amanda Simmons, Amanda Notarianni and Charlie MacPherson of Notarianni Glass, Dot Sim and Karen Liversedge.
Karen studied at Sheffield College of Art and the London College of Fashion. After working as a designer and then technical manager both in the UK and Morocco she returned to Britain and relocated to Oban in Argyll where she learned new technical skills and began working in glass. She produces glass panels, sculpture and lighting.
Amanda Simmons trained in stained glass with Ray Bradley at the London Institute of Art and gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Glass and Architecture from Central St Martins College of Art and Design. She has run a contemporary glass studio for the last five years and in 2005 moved to Scotland and set up a new studio and gallery space in Corsock in Dumfries and Galloway.
Scottish jeweller Dot Sim has recently started using glass making techniques with her silver work after attending a workshop with Susan Cohn at North Lands Creative Glass last year followed by a residency. She produces kiln formed and blown glass opaque forms which are designed to act as containers for her jewellery.
Amanda Notarianni and Charlie Macpherson of Notarianni Glass design and hand blow each piece using subtle changes to the colour combinations to produce unique work. They use a variety of techniques, often trapping glass cane inclusions between the layers of molten glass to achieve the optical qualities within each piece.
Glass is on at the Designs Gallery, 179 King Street, Castle Douglas, from 7 October to 11 November 2006. Opening hours Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm. Admission free.
