This weekend there is a wave of open studio events and Christmas exhibitions full of unique gift ideas.
Hand Made in Newport in Fife on 9 and 10 December features a festive collection by local designers with jewellery by Dot Sim, textiles by Jane Keith, ceramics by Susan Basham and glass by Adrienne McStay. LucyMoose in Auchtermuchty opens her studio the same weekend and other dates up to Christmas selling bags and corsages. Her stuff-your-doodle would be a surprising gift for any creative youngster.
An Open Studio with invited makers at the MAKE studio in Gateside, Fife on 16 December features ceramics by Gavin Burnett and Chris Donnely, glass by Nicola Cairns, Leanne Fulton and Richard Greggory.
In Edinburgh from 9 to 11 December there is an open studio and exhibition of felt by Jeanette Sendler and knitting by Barbara Ridland showing the latest results of their collaboration. Exhibitions in Edinburgh include jewellery by Emma Gale at the Open Eye gallery, Selection Box, which includes wood by Scott Irvine at the Leith Gallery and a joint show of ceramics by Craig Mitchell and illustrations by Steven Appleby alongside a solo show by jeweller Catherine Martin at the Scottish Gallery.
At the Dick in Kilmarnock the contemporary craft exhibition Treasure takes place on 9 and 10 December with exhibitors including jeweller Gilly Langton.
Design Collection, the annual exhibition of over 80 leading UK and European designers including ceramics, silver, metal, jewellery, glass and sculptural handbags is on at the Roger Billcliffe Gallery in Glasgow until 31 December 2006.
At An Tobar on Tobermory, Isle of Mull the Argyll Boxed Collection brings together 28 individual pieces, each created in a 12”x12”x6” framed box, forming a collection that reflects the range of professional practice in Argyll.
Arabesque the largest Christmas Exhibition ever at Bonhoga Gallery on Shetland has a display of baskets in the new lower gallery, including work by Lise Bech, and in the upper gallery work includes silk ties by Jane Keith, wood by Ruth Mae and tiles and teapots by Virginia Graham.
Winter Warmth, the winter showcase at the Park Gallery and at Callendar House in Falkirk builds on the success of previous years and features creations from over 60 makers in a range of disciplines including glass, ceramics, jewellery, scarves, bags and knitted textiles until 6 January 2007. Work includes jewellery by Donna Barry, Sarah Keay and Emily Beckmann, paper by Joanne Kaar, glass by Jessamy Kelly, knitted scarves and bags by Lorraine Linton and printed textile cushions by Clare Nicolson.
A new publication ‘The Little Book of Glasgow’ edited by Deedee Cuddihy which tells stories of jewellery would make an unusual stocking filler for people who love Glasgow and jewellery. Based on an exhibition held in 2005 copies are available at £2.50 plus p&p from deedeecuddihy@aol.com
And for anyone who loves glass the perfect gift is the book ‘Reflections – A Decade of North Lands Creative Glass’ featuring work by 60 internationally renowed glass artists who have supported or held masterclasses at North Lands Creative Glass in Lybster over the past ten years.
