An exhibition of glass by Colin Reid is on at the Scottish Gallery until the end of January along with Pacific Rim, a display of jewellery and metalwork by eleven contemporary artists working in Australia, Japan, Korea and New Zealand.
In 1990 the Scottish Gallery held and exhibition called the Decade Ahead which featured a group of artists they believed were emerging talents for the future. This included glass artist Colin Reid, and nearly two decades on this is his third solo show at the gallery.
Colin, who studied at St Martins School of Art and Stourbridge School of Art, runs his own studio, and his work is held in thirty five museum collections worldwide. He creates glass sculpture through the method of kilncast glass, in which optical glass is cast into a mould enabling excellent reproduction of form and texture. The exhibition features work that is about familiar everyday objects seen in unexpected ways.
The Pacific Rim exhibition looks at the extent to which jewellery and metalwork can reveal particular concerns, traditions and techniques within very different cultures. It shows common ground in the work of selected jewellers both technically and conceptually – enamel work, images from the natural world, concern with domestic issues etc. However, it also highlights strong differences which make it an interesting reflection on the way that cultural difference is highlighted in contemporary objects.
The two exhibitions are on from 6 to 31 January 2007 at the Scottish Gallery, 16 Dundas Street, Edinburgh EH3 6HZ. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm. Admission free.
