The Joy of Making with Felt
23 March 2007

An exhibition of feltwork from pupils in Inverclyde schools called 'The Joy of Making' is currently open at the McLean Museum in Greenock.

The exhibition is the culmination of a six month craft residency in six Inverclyde schools: Kings Oak, St Ninians, Clune Park, Sacred Heart, Wellington Academy and Gourock High School.

The pupils were introduced to the skills and techniques of making felt by feltmaker Liz Brown who started as artist in residence in September 2006. She covered a wide variety of subject matter through feltmaking, and the exhibits range from felt planets, handbags and purses to jewellery and animals.

One of the most prominent exhibits is a felt sailing boat made by Michael Still of Gourock High. A highlight of the exhibition is a full sized multi-coloured yurt in which visitors can sit and view the DVD of the pupils at work.

Cultural coordinator Moira McKay who has managed the residency, which received financial support from the Scottish Arts Council, said “This has been a fantastic experience for our pupils and I hope that many of them will take forward the skills they have learned. Every school now has the resources to allow pupils to continue to experience the joy of making”

The exhibition is on from 16 to 27 March 2007 at the McLean Museum, 15 Kelly Street, Greenock.  Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm.  Admission free.
