The Degree Show at Duncan of Jordanstone, one of the cultural highlights of the Dundee arts calendar, opens this weekend.
Students from all disciplines, including jewellery, textile design, innovative product design and interior and environmental design will be showing their work.
Jewellery and metal design student Barbara Macleod, who won a Goldsmith’s precious metal bursary, draws inspiration for her designs from the intricate decorative detail that has been used in everything from lacework to architecture across centuries from medieval times through to the Victorian era.
Her aim is to bring vintage decorative styles into a contemporary setting and says "My work is moving away from a more minimalist, bland aesthetic towards more decorative patterns. I think there is so much there that is interesting but that can be used in a new way." After graduation she is hoping to set up her own studio on her father’s croft in Lochinver.
The show, the first of the season, attracts thousands of visitors to the University and is seen as a great springboard for emerging artists.
Duncan of Jordanstone has a reputation as one of the most exciting art schools in the UK. This reputation was recently strengthened with the announcement that a feasibility study had been launched to explore the possibility of a new Dundee based link with the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The Dundee Degree Show takes place from 19 to 26 May 2007 at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee, 13 Perth Road, Dundee tel: 01382 345330. Open Saturday and Sunday 9.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday 9.30am to 8.30pm and Saturday 26 May from 9.30am to 2pm.
