2007 is the fifth anniversary of the Spring Fling, the annual open studios event when seventy one makers and artists across Dumfries and Galloway open their studios to the public.
The event on the 26 to 28 May 2007 includes three new makers, furniture maker Sam Chinnery, glass artist Amanda Simmons and ceramicist Andrew Adair.
Based in a studio in Castle Douglas is ceramicist Hannah McAndrew who will be demonstrating the throwing and decoration of a variety of pots. In her work she makes hand thrown and individually decorated domestic tableware.
Her range, which she is constantly expanding, includes mugs and jugs, plates and bowls, casserole dishes and tea pots. The decoration is based on natural patterns and textures as well as on traditional folk arts from around the world.
She explains “The pots are thrown in red earthenware clay and decorated with coloured slips (liquid clay mixed with metal oxides). I use the techniques of slip trailing (applying slip to the pot using a tool similar to a piping bag) and sgraffito (scratching through a layer of slip to reveal the red body below). These are traditional centuries old ways of decorating pots and lend themselves to the second area of my work, which is in making commemorative pieces for special occasions.”
The Spring Fling brochure provides information on what you can expect to see at each studio, a price guide, directions, suggested routes between studios and other helpful details such as wheelchair access, toilet facilities and parking information. There are even recommendations on where to stop to eat and drink.
To celebrate their fifth anniversary the organisers have introduced five studio bus routes. Places are limited on these minibuses and they must be booked in advance.
