Shetland Shows Haute Kilture
28 May 2007

Haute Kilture, an exhibition of kilts and sporrans for the 21st century created by Malcolm Cruickshank, has opened at the Bonhoga Gallery in Shetland.

Malcolm, who trained in contemporary applied arts at the Cumbria Institute of the Arts, became interested in the concept of the ‘art’ kilt, and successfully applied for a Dewar Arts Award to be able to create this collection.

The kilts use a variety of materials from fliers used to promote clubs to weed control fabric, which is then stitched to create a new kind of textile.

He says “I did not set out to become a kilt maker, certainly not in any traditional sense, and the products in the exhibition, whilst all entirely functional, are intended to be art objects first and foremost.”

The exhibition is on at the Bonhoga Gallery, Weisdale Mill, Shetland from 19 May to 17 June 2007.  Opening hours Monday to Saturday 10.30am to 4.30pm and Sunday 12 noon to 4.30pm.  Admission free.
