Homecoming Exhibition Reveals Precious Cargo

The exhibition Precious Cargo, currently touring the Highlands, reflects Scotland’s Year of Homecoming with a theme of migration, boats and the sea.

The exhibition, designed by Brodie Nairn and Nicky Burns from Glasstorm in Tain, is an innovative installation of closed Cargo boxes, each of which reveals an object or contemporary ‘souvenir’ of the Highlands which travellers to lands across the sea might have cherished to remind them of ‘home’.

Craft makers from across the Highlands and Scotland were invited to respond to the theme and create the ‘souvenirs’ or ‘Precious Cargo’ to go inside the crates. The work of 30 artists was selected from jewellery, textiles, wood and ceramics to film and showcases contemporary craftsmanship.

The exhibition shows work by Joanne Kaar, Laura West, Lucy Woodley, Rachel Skene, Alistair McKay, Gilly Langton, Angus Clyne, Dave Woodley, Mhairi Killen, Phatsheep, Andrea Williamson, Penny Woodley, Valerie Pragnell, Sam Samson, Richard Goodwin Jones and Alan Baillie.

Precious Cargo is on at St Fergus Gallery in Wick from 30 may until 27 June 2009, then visits the Iona Gallery in Kingussie from 4 July to 1 August 2009.
