craftscotland - A Wee Bit of Light Relief

Susan Cross - Jewellery

Susan, who has been based in Edinburgh since 1989, trained at Herefordshire College of Art & Design and Middlesex Polytechnic.

“Drawing and collage underpin my creative activity as a jeweller. I handle materials intuitively; this fuels the development of ideas, often in direct response to the making process."

“Gold and silver, usually in the form of wire, provide the basic dialogue, whilst combining and contrasting textile related materials offer a greater freedom of expression and spontaneity."

“Silver is oxidised black, likening it to the drawn graphite or inky line. Linear structure, texture and transparency are all qualities with which I am fascinated.”

She was joint winner of the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize 2007: Jewellery, and her work was on display with the other shortlisted jewellers at the Jerwood Space in London in 2007. The exhibition visited the National Museum of Scotland in October 2007.

In 2007 she was invited to participate in a group touring exhibition entitled Process Works concerning the process of idea development. She was also represented at Collect 2007 by the Scottish Gallery.

She has exhibited internationally and her work is held in several collections and included in various publications.
