The Scottish Arts Council: Funding Priorities for Crafts

The Scottish Arts Council's Crafts Strategy envisages crafts, including Scottish indigenous crafts, making a dynamic contribution to contemporary culture and the economy. The Arts Council fosters artistic excellence and makes contemporary work of quality available to as wide an audience as possible. Funding is available to assist the creative and professional development of individuals and to organisations for a wide range of projects to take crafts forward.

For Individuals

The Scottish Arts Council supports:

Professional Development - assistance for individual artists and others working at a professional level in the arts in Scotland, supporting their role in the development of the sector.
Funding is available for: short-term or one-off training courses; conference fees; master classes; mentoring; travel to see work; undertaking research; establishing contacts and partnerships; and exploring opportunities for future projects. In support of the UK initiative European Year of Disabled People 2003, additional funds are available to support skills development for disabled artists and performers.

Minimum £75 – maximum £2,000 Applications are received throughout the year

Start Up - to encourage new makers with a high level of creativity and skill, who have a viable development plan, to establish themselves as practitioners in Scotland. Funding is available to assist with maintenance and the cost of equipment for production.

Minimum £3,000 – maximum £8,000.

Creative Development - to encourage established makers to create new work. Funding is available to purchase time and/or additional equipment to develop work in new directions and promote the results.

Minimum £5,000 – maximum £8,000

For Organisations

Supporting organisations to undertake projects which will result in:

  • Improvement to the quality and quantity of crafts exhibitions shown, initiated and circulated in Scotland, and any educational activities related to the exhibition

Applications of £3,000 and over.  Funding for projects taking place in 2004/05 is already fully committed but applications can be accepted for projects taking place after 1 April 2005.  Applications under £3,000 are received throughout the year.
