Simon Ward - CeramicsSimon is graduate of South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education and the Royal College of Art his work has been influenced by residencies in France, Norway and Japan. One of Scotland’s leading ceramists, he won the Bronze Award at the 3rd Korean World Ceramics Biennale in 2005 for his work 'Secret Meaning'. In 2003 he won the Special Judges Award at the 2nd Korean World Ceramics Biennale in Korea. His work concentrates primarily on the functional vessel, although he has also created large scale ceramic sculptures. During a five month international ceramic artist-in-residence programme at Shigaraki Ceramic Centre in Japan in 1999 he developed a range of tableware which explored the cultural rituals and ceremonial contrast between the East and West in relation to dining. Following this residency he produced a range of vessels exploring the connections between form and surface in relation to Japanese textiles and traditional dress. Celadon boxes and 'Form and Deformation' are two works from a series of new pieces that were made as a result of travelling in both Japan and Korea in 2005, and are a direct response to calligraphy and location. They were shown in an exhibition with Keiko Mukaide in London in 2006. Simon is a lecturer in 3D design at Gray’s School of Art. In 2007 he will be exhibiting in The Cutting Edge touring exhibition.
