Jeff Zimmer uses traditional glass painting techniques on layers of glass to create enigmatic three-dimensional scenes.
Originally from Washington, DC, Jeff moved to Edinburgh to pursue his Masters at the Edinburgh College of Art.
Jeff’s illuminated images are hand-painted, fired onto layers of glass, and displayed behind vintage frames. He is fascinated by exploring areas between certainty and doubt and provoking a sensual experience of light.
His collection of work made for SOFA Chicago this year is from two series. In one, luminous blankets of cloud act as a metaphor for the disconnect between perpetrators and those acted upon. The second explores physical and psychological aspects of boundaries.
Jeff won Second Prize at the 2014 Coburg Prize for Contemporary Glass, and is the 2014 Stephen Procter Fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra. His work can be found in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the European Museum for Modern Glass and the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft.
