Andrea Walsh – Ceramics & Glass

Andrea works with bone china clay combined with paper to create vessels which are each unique yet compliment each other as a series of works.  Using a slipcasting technique the paper haves as a strengthener enabling her to achive an extremely fine shell of clay.

Some forms are vessels containing glass which is cast directly inside the piece, emulating liquid contained within the form.  The glass level is visible through the china from outside the vessel and using a palette of subtle hues the glass resembles water which has a stillness and calm.

She writes about her work:

‘Fascinated by the inherent qualities of both materials, I make simple yet considered forms that explore the behaviour of both bone china and glass, their shared properties of translucency and clarity, to create tactile and sensual pieces which can capture movement and a moment in time.’

She has exhibited across the UK and will be selling her work at Origin: the London Craft Fair in October 2006.  She is holding a solo exhibition at the Open Eye Gallery in November and has been selected for ‘gifted’ at the Royal Museum from November to January 2007.
