Autumn Inspirations for the Home

After the heat of summer sunshine comes the coolness of autumn when we bring warmth into our homes through our choice of decoration.   Autumn has inspired two of these designers while the others are using the season to launch new ranges of their work.

Veronica Newman, the daughter of an archaelogist, is influenced by the fineness of ancient pottery.  In 2004 she designed a handthrown vase with a carved rim echoing the shape of a flower for the touring exhibition ‘Clay in Bloom’ which showed work inspired by the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh by members of the Scottish Potters Association.  To display this in the show she made a selection of porcelain paper clay autumn leaves with coloured clay, stains and oxides.  These are now available and would be interesting autumnal table decorations or could be placed in bowls.

In 2005 glass artist Brodie Nairn set up Glasstorm, a contemporary glass studio and gallery in Tain with glass artist Nichola Burns.  They have now created the new Glasstorm range which is currently being showcased at The Lighthouse in Glasgow until 29 October 2006.   A special collection, including a limited edition gold and black storm bowl, will be available at ‘gifted’ at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh from 24 November to 21 January 2007.

Silversmith and jeweller Beth Legg, a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, explores the idea of the embedded object and memory. She uses twigs as a direct reference to the changing Scottish landscape and the memories it holds.  Each of her pieces is a composition of elements on the themes of honesty, landscape and memory.  She will also be exhibiting in ‘gifted’ at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh.

Natural materials and organic shapes are popular for the home this year.  Basketmaker Lise Bech lives and works in Ayrshire where she grows a wide range of willow which she combines with materials from the local landscape.  Her new range of asymmetric organic forms combines her traditional technical skills with a new level of emotional expression.  She has been selected to sell her new work at Origin: the London Craft Fair 2006 in October.
