At the heart of craftscotland is a searchable online directory of makers, retailers and galleries, which gives every maker and crafts business based in Scotland a free webpage to promote their work. Thousands of monthly visitors are using the directory for research and commissioning - looking at craft, finding out where to see work and contacting those they are interested in direct. Read about opportunities directory members are being offered. If you are based in the Highlands or Ayrshire you automatically get additional exposure on crafthighlands.org or craftayrshire.org.
To be eligible to register on the directory you must be living and working in Scotland and meet the criteria in the following definition of craft:
Craft is an object which has a high degree of handmade input, designed and made by the maker, and produced as a unique item or in a limited batch production. It is not necessarily made or designed using traditional materials. The work will fall under one of the following disciplines: ceramics, furniture and wood, glass, jewellery, silversmithing and metalwork, lettering, musical instruments, paper, textiles, basketmaking and willow weaving. This includes indigenous crafts, practice that is developed through being passed on in communities rather than formal education, such as boatbuilding.
Painting, printmaking and photography are not eligible, as they are considered visual arts under the Scottish Arts Council definition, also we do not include cards made from kits.
Adding yourself to the directory is easy. Join now in the following ways:
1. Join online:
Register as a Maker online (10 mins)
Register as a Gallery or Retailer online
2. Request a form to be posted to you. Email enquiries at craftscotland dot org or telephone 0131 524 9424, indicating which form you would like: ‘maker’, or ‘gallery & shop'.
To reduce the chances of you being 'timed out' by your computer when joining the directory online, you may like to write your text in advance and paste it into the form. View examples of the text you will need in the maker or gallery & shop directories.
To be added to the directory you must be living and working in Scotland, and create works of ceramics, glass, furniture, wood, jewellery, metalwork, lettering, musical instruments, textiles or basketmaking. Read more information about the project, or browse our Frequently Asked Questions (includes information on how to amend/delete your entry).
