Spirit of Air, Inscriptions, a new body of expressive willow works by Lizzie Farey, opens at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries in March.
The solo exhibition, celebrating the new creative direction of one of Scotland’s highest profile practitioners, comprises a series of large scale wall-based and suspended works in willow, hazel and ash.
“The work has come from a journey that I have been making: travelling away from the more intense, closely woven pieces of wicker that I have produced in the past towards a much lighter, aerial direction, using willow as a medium for drawing in air” explains Lizzie.
She is fascinated by willow, an attraction that is sustained by her continuous exploration of the qualities of this and other natural materials of choice.
A Scottish Arts Council Creative Development Award enabled her to spend time developing this new work.
Spirit of Air, Inscriptions, is on at Gracefield Arts Centre, 28 Edinburgh Road, Dumfries, DG1 1JQ from 7 March to 18 April 2009. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Admission free. The exhibition will tour select UK venues in 2009/10.
A full colour illustrated publication describing Lizzie Farey’s work and practice is published in association with the exhibition and is available for sale.
