This summer paper artist Joanne Kaar is introducing the culture of Taiwan to the highlands of Scotland through a series of workshops she is running with Taiwan design student Ding-Way Lin.
Joanne met Ding-Way last year when she was artist-in-residence at the Chaoyang University of Technology in Taiwan. During her residency she learned traditional eastern papermaking techniques and taught students western papermaking techniques as well as being invited to hold an exhibition of new work at the Su-Ho paper museum in Taipei.
She was guided throughout her visit by Ding-Way which enabled her to experience the culture of Taiwan, and now he has chosen to visit Scotland during his summer vacation. This is his first visit outside Taiwan and his brother has paid for the travel costs.
The Taiwan Experience, a cultural experience in the uses of paper for crafts and traditional festivals, is partly funded by HI-Arts, and organised by Arts Play Highland. Events are taking place between 11 July and 2 September 2005 in North Uist, Tobermory, Caithness, Sutherland and Inverness.
The workshops will be friendly and informal but delivered in a professional and approachable manner. Each workshop is from 10am to 4pm and costs are from £5 to £20 a day. Numbers are limited to12 people for each one and participants are asked to bring their own lunch. Places can be booked via the venue and some workshops are tailored for specific groups, such as Women’s Aid.
