Four young Scottish jewellers – Amy Chan, Georgia Wiseman, Naoko Yoshizawa and Hannah Louise Lamb - have been selected to exhibit at One Year On which showcases ‘the ones to watch’ in the UK.
It has launched the career of a number of makers who have since become established names, and this year 60 designer-makers, who graduated a year ago or have been in business for a year, were selected to take part from over 130 applications.
The event is a partnership between the Crafts Council and New Designers, the annual design fair for new graduates which runs in London from 30 June 2005.
‘One Year On is a unique opportunity for new businesses to launch themselves to the public for the first time. It’s a showcase that introduces brand new businesses to the design and applied arts markets, as well as providing a key chance for the press to see the talents selected by the Crafts Council as the ones to watch. The criteria for selection are quality of making and technique; consistency of voice; originality of design; commitment to and development of the business,’ says Beatrice Mayfield, professional development officer at the Crafts Council.
The four young designers chosen from Scotland have already been making their mark on the design scene.
Naoko Yoshizawa, based in Edinburgh, is a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art and Hiko Mizuno College of Jewellery in Tokyo. She creates delicate, colourful pieces from paper, thread and precious metals, and her aim is to bring paper, which is prized for its lightness and versatility in Japan, to a new audience.
Amy Chan is also a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art. Along with Naoko she was selected to take part in an exhibition at the Lesley Craze Gallery in April which featured the work of 22 designers associated with Edinburgh College of Art including emerging young talents.
Hannah Louise Lamb, also based in Edinburgh, trained at Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 2004 from the Royal College of Art. Her work is concerned with the interiors of home and is inspired by wallcoverings, interior fabrics, pets and familiar imagery of the home. Hannah was invited to submit work to maker – wearer – viewer, the exhibition of European narrative jewellery.
Both Naoko and Hannah have been selected to exhibit for the first time at Chelsea Crafts Fair this year.
Twenty three year old award winning designer Georgia Wiseman, a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, uses computer aided design within her work which focuses on geometric forms, symmetry and repetitive patterns. She has exhibited with Dazzle and shows work at Brazen Studios in Glasgow.
One Year On takes place at New Designers 2005 which runs for two separate weeks from 30 June to 3 July and the 7 to 10 July 2005. For further details about the event or to buy tickets online visit New Designers.
