Dramatic Textiles Show Visits Scotland
01 August 2005

A Field of Centres, an exhibition of new work by textile artist Michael Brennand-Wood, opens this weekend at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries.

This is the only Scottish venue for the exhibition which features a group of constructed textile relief panels that reference spatial and geometric orientations found in early historical textiles.

The work explores the illusionary space between two and three dimensions, utilising computerised machine embroidery, acrylic paint and collage. It is colourful, dramatic and almost holographic in feel with intense detail that merges at a distance into strongly optical configurations.

Michael Brennand-Wood studied embroidery at Manchester Polytechnic and textiles at Birmingham Polytechnic.  His work explores pattern as a visual language using different materials to explore ways of associating ideas together.  His work is held in collections by the Crafts Council, Victoria & Albert Museum, Contemporary Arts Society, the Powerhouse Museum in Australia and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto, Japan.

The exhibition is taking place at Gracefield Arts Centre, 28 Edinburgh Road, Dumfries DG1 1JQ from 6 August until 17 September 2005.  Opening hours Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm.  Admission free.
