Itami Invitation to Scottish Textile Artists
13 June 2006

At the invitation of the Itami Culture Foundation, a group of eight Scottish textile artists will be exhibiting at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Itami, Japan in June 2006.

The exhibition, Sense of Identity, will feature exclusive creations that examine the ways in which Scottish textile artists have absorbed and embraced their history, traditions and unique environment and will comment on how this is reflected in their work. It also serves to address their sense of national identity; and in an ever shrinking world, to understand if this matters.

The work of the eight makers – Joan Baxter, James Donald, Claire Heminsley, Fiona Hutchinson, Lorraine McCue, Ruth Morris, Fiona McIntosh, and Jeanette Sendler - demonstrate a diversity of approaches including tapestry, weave, knit, print, stitched and felt.

Textile artist Jeanette Sendler, who usually works in felt, has moved her work into a new direction for the exhibition.  In collaboration with Shetland based knitter Barbara Ridland she has used knitting to express the ingenuity of both the Scottish fishermen navigating the Atlantic and the women who turned waiting into art.

The exhibition seeks to challenge both cloth and convention whilst showcasing Scottish textile talent.

The exhibition is on at the Museum of Arts and Crafts, Itami, Japan from 22 June until 2 July 2006.
