Karen Simpson, a Glasgow School of Art student, is the winner of the 2006 Young Designer Silversmith of the Year Award.
The Young Designer Silversmith of the Year Award is an annual competition sponsored by The Goldsmiths’ Company of London. The aim of the Award, which was inaugurated in 1994, is to encourage the design of studio silver, and to promote excellence both of design and of craft skills.
The competition is open to any student aged under 30 on an approved specialist course in the UK. Karen Simpson is the fifth student from the department of silversmithing and jewellery at Glasgow School of Art to have received this prestigious award.
The other students who won were Marion Kane in 1998 with her coffee pot, followed by Douglas Blair in 1999 with the Millennium Clock, Jennifer Paterson in 2001 with a flower vase, and in 2004 Helen Gaffney with her condiment set.
All the winning objects have been gifted to Glasgow's museum collection, and two are currently on display at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum: Marion Kane’s coffee pot is in the Design Gallery and Helen Gaffney’s condiment set is on show in the Study Centre. Karen Simpson’s fruit bowl will go on display later this year.
