Scottish Craft at Collect 2007
02 February 2007

The art of tapestry in the 21st century in Scotland will be celebrated at Collect 2007, the international art fair for contemporary objects, through a display by the Dovecot Studios and the Scottish Gallery.

The combination of new studio work by individual artists and maquettes of larger scale commissions from the Dovecot Studios aims to offer an insight into the craft of tapestry and the different possible interpretations.

Edinburgh based textile artists Jo Barker, Sara Brennan and Fiona Mathison created new work for the exhibition, and these will be shown alongside examples from the Dovecot Studios developed during major commissions for two large scale works in conjunction with painter Patrick Caulfield RA, which now hangs in the British Library,  and artist and photographer Liz Rideal.  There will also be study material for a new large scale tapestry that Dovecot Studio is working on to a design by jeweller Wendy Ramshaw CBE.

On their own stand the Scottish Gallery will be showing work by Scottish makers including ceramics by Frances Priest, silver by Michael Lloyd and Adrian Hope, glass by Keiko Mukaide, textiles by Norma Starznakowna and jewellery by Susan Cross, Peter Chang, Dorothy Hogg and Andrew Lamb.

There will be demonstrations on 10 and 11 February by the Dovecot Studios in the British Galleries Study Area 55 where they will be weaving a design by Wendy Ramshaw.  On 11 and 12 February Lizzie Farey will be demonstrating weaving in willow in Japan, Room 47e when she weaves a horsetail form using a technique called English Randing.  Her work will be shown at Collect by the Flow gallery.  All the demonstrations take place between 2pm and 5pm.
