Reveal, the inaugural exhibition by the Association for Contemporary Jewellery, Scotland Group, has opened at Edinburgh College of Art.
The exhibition features work by contemporary jewellers and designers based in Scotland, and premieres new pieces especially created for this collection.
The jewellery on display incorporates a varied range of techniques and materials. Ann Marie Shillito has used CAD to design a series of brooches which have then been produced in ABS plastic using rapid prototyping. Textile and metal have been combined by Suzanne Smith in her felt, lace and silver pieces, whilst Sarah Keay’s knitted wire jewellery includes nylon and found objects. Techniques such as photo etching, saw piercing and oxidisation add detail to the colourful silver and resin ‘Biomorph’ pieces created by Islay Spalding.
The exhibition also shows work by Pilar Agueci, Stephen Bottomley, Lilian Busch, Shimara Carlow, Melina Clark, Jenny Deans, Genna Delaney, Yvonne Gilhooly, Ruth Gordon, Siobhan Healy, Michael Kay, Sarah Kettley, S.Ailsa MacFarlane (Lucklaw Silver), Alison MacLeod, Cathy McCarthy, Nicola Morrison, Simone Nolden and Michael Pell.
The exhibition is supported by a talk Jewellery, Craft and Design – Collection Perspectives by Rose Watban, curator of applied art, and Jane Wilkinson, curator of Far Eastern collections at the National Museum of Scotland. They will present personal perspectives on collecting contemporary jewellery, in the broader context of collecting contemporary applied art and design today. The talk is in Evolution House Learning Zone at Edinburgh College of Art on Wednesday 6 February 2008 at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Admission free but booking required, email enquiries@acj.org.uk
A book launch and reception to celebrate the new Directory of Jewellers being launched by the ACJ will take place on Wednesday 6 February 2008 at 8pm in the board room on the fifth floor of Evolution House.
